Everyone should feel like they can come to work in a place free from harassment. When harassment occurs on the job, it can make the workplace a very overwhelming place to go as an employee.

Harassment take many forms and can be verbal, physical, based on sex, religion or race and it is all illegal. The exact definition of what actions are harassment can change depending on what state you are in.

One form of harassment, sexual harassment includes any uninvited comments, actions or behaviors regarding sex, gender or sexual orientation. While it is most often reported between those of the opposite sex, it does not have to be between a man and a woman and is not limited to what touching or what is said. If you received an obscene image or video or a suggestive email, those can all be forms of sexual harassment.

Non-sexual harassment can include comments or actions regarding someone’s religion, race, age, gender or skin color. Anything that interferes with another’s success as an employee and makes the workplace hostile can be considered harassment. In other words, it’s grown-up bullying.

If you are being harassed at work, it is important to report it to your human resources and start documenting what has occurred, including as many details as possible.
