General Terms and Structures Of A Contract

Posted on July 23, 2017 · Posted in business litigation, contracts, employment law

Contracts come in all shapes and sizes. When you begin a new job, you may have to sign an employment contract. When you rent a home or car, you may have a lease agreement. When you take out a loan, you will have a financial agreement laying out the terms of the loan.

Many of these contracts are written up in a standard form to benefit the person offering it. Just because it is a standard contract though, does not mean it cannot be altered or negotiated. If you would like terms not in the contract and they are agreed upon, you can make changes.

If you are the one offering the contract, you need to ensure the terms are not unfair.

Before signing a contract, it is crucial to read through every word, especially the fine print and make sure what the contract says reflects what was negotiated. Allow yourself plenty of time to understand and consider the contract and don’t let yourself get pressured into signing anything.

Make sure you cross off any blank boxes that you do not fill out so they cannot be altered and make sure you always obtain a copy of the contract for your own records.

If you have any questions about a contract, whether you are offering one or signing one, it is always a good idea to run it by an experienced attorney who can help identify any possible problem areas and help you make sure you get what you intend with the contract.
